What is EMDR?

EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a researched and evidence-based type of psychotherapy that can help you heal from the effects of disturbing past experiences.  While we can't make the memory disappear, we can work together to help make it less overwhelming.

How does EMDR work?

Through the use of eye movements or other types of bilateral stimulation, past trauma can be processed and symptoms can be relieved.

According to a Harvard researcher, EMDR works by way of the same biological mechanisms involved in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep.

What should I expect with EMDR?

In the therapy room, we will look at and process a past disturbing memory. During successful EMDR processing, typically your feelings about a memory will be transformed and something overwhelming can become something empowering.

We will begin by choosing a target memory from your past to process.   Sometimes we will be able to process an entire memory in one session, other times it will take longer. Once the event has been processed, you can often find immediate relief from symptoms and pain. This relief is often long lasting and permanent.

Depending on your unique situation, we may choose to do EMDR on it's own or in the context of ongoing psychotherapy.
